Greeting Race Fans,
Rookie Jitters:
Mary Jeans Wildcat stepped into the batter’s box for the first time on July 29 at Arlington Park in the Windy City. The experience was “all new” for our young filly who was vanned up the night before to an unfamiliar environment, ran on the All Weather Track for the first time and then carried new jockey Carlos Montalvo around the Arlington oval for Six Furlongs. MJW was reluctant to load but on the third try finally lined up alongside her rivals in gate #7.
Mary Jean broke greenly and was 7th at the start, then was urged to join the fray while running three to four lanes wide in 6th position. She moved into 5th after a half, and then Carlos angled our rookie five wide, away from any contact or trouble, for the stretch run. #5 Zaphical, #1 Maximous Prada and #4 Five Star Nap began to distance themselves from the field. After a “pop of the crop” by Carlos, Mary Jean began to respond in the lane. She quickly closed on #6 Not In Jest and after an all out grind to the wire, the camera revealed a “dead heat” photo for fourth. Our Wildcat rookie had gained a great deal of experience in her inaugural battle from gate to wire.
Maureen, cousin TJ, Aaron Emig, and I were on hand for the exhilarating finish and rewarded our sweet chestnut with her favorite peppermints in the shed-row on the backside. She cooled out beautifully and hopefully began to understand what this game is all about. Our rookie did not hit one out of the park but she delivered a solid single and learned how to circle the bases. MJW will fit nicely in our lineup and we look forward to her next “at bat!”
Wager well!
Mike
